A Mother's Relief: How Mobile Clinics Saved Baby Grace

Florence Apio · Katakwi, Soroti District

When Florence's newborn developed a high fever in a remote village 40km from the nearest hospital, RORU's mobile health clinic arrived just in time to provide critical care.

Florence Apio lives in Katakwi, a small village in Soroti District where the nearest health center is over 40 kilometers away. When her three-week-old daughter Grace developed a dangerously high fever, Florence feared the worst.

Help Arrives

"I had no money for transport and the boda-boda riders were asking for 50,000 shillings to take us to the hospital," Florence recalls. "I was crying, holding my baby, not knowing what to do. Then my neighbor told me the RORU health team was at the trading center."

The mobile clinic team, staffed by a clinical officer and two nurses, quickly assessed baby Grace and diagnosed a respiratory infection. They administered antibiotics and monitored her for several hours before she stabilized.

Ongoing Support

The community health worker assigned to Florence's village continued to check on baby Grace over the following weeks. Today, Grace is a healthy, active toddler, and Florence has become a vocal advocate for the mobile clinic program in her community.

"Without RORU's clinic, I don't know if my baby would be alive today," Florence says. "They bring health to us instead of making us travel impossible distances."
